Kamakura Academia

Japanese: 鎌倉アカデミア - かまくらあかでみあ
Kamakura Academia
People's University was established by the Kamakura Cultural Association, a citizen group in Kamakura City. With the aim of building a cultural city in Kamakura and planning contact and exchange with world cultures, a comprehensive school from elementary school to university was conceived in Kamakurayama. In 1946 (Showa 21), Komyo-ji Temple was used as a temporary school building, and courses in literature, drama, and industry were first offered. Entrance was required to have completed the fourth year of secondary school or higher, and the school welcomed some of Japan's leading instructors. Under the guidance of the second principal, Saegusa Hirooto, Hattori Yukimasa, Hayashi Tatsuo, Murayama Tomoyoshi, and Kataoka Ryoichi were among the faculty. Commonly known as Kamakura Daigaku, it was a pioneer of the people's university movement and had a major impact on local cultural movements. However, due to the severe social and economic situation after the war, the school closed after four and a half years.
