Gigas - Gigas (English spelling)

Gigas - Gigas (English spelling)

(1) One of the giants (Titans) in Greek mythology. Usually, the plural form is Gigantes. Son of Gaia. When Cronus, persuaded by his mother Gaia, cut off his father Uranus's genitals, his blood spilled on the earth, and from there he was born along with the Erinyes and Melias. The gigas rebelled against the gods of Olympus and attacked them, which led to a war called the Gigantomachia (Battle of the Giants). The gigas were a formidable enemy to the gods, but there was a prophecy that they could be defeated if they could get a human on their side, so the gods recruited Hercules, and Zeus defeated Porphyrion, Athena defeated Enceladus, and Hermes defeated Hippolytus, and so on. The gigas' bodies are said to have been buried under volcanoes in Greece and Italy, and the bones of prehistoric animals were generally believed to be the bones of the gigas.

(2) One of the barbarian tribes north of Greece mentioned in Homer's Odyssey. This is distinct from the giants of the myth in (1). Their king, Eurymedon, is said to have destroyed his entire clan along with himself.
