A family of birds in the order Phasianidae. Includes the subfamily Meleagris, Ptarmigan, and Phasianinae. Widely distributed on all continents except Antarctica. Well-known birds in Japan include the Japanese pheasant, pheasant, and rock ptarmigan. They also have a long history of being eaten, including poultry chickens.
