A transliteration of the Sanskrit Kiṃnara. Originally a demigod in Hindu mythology. He appears frequently in the two great Indian epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, along with the similar Kiṃpuruṣa (which appears in the Vedic texts), but the relationship between the two is unclear. He is said to have a beautiful singing voice and a horse's head. He was adopted into Buddhism and is considered a winged singing god. He is included in the eight deities (→Hachibushu) who protect the teachings of the Buddha.
