A traveling entertainer. There are two types. One is an entertainer who works as a farmer during the day, but travels to various places at certain times of the year to perform arts. The other is an entertainer who continues to travel regardless of the season and earns a living by performing. The former were particularly popular around New Year and at local festivals. Traveling entertainers during New Year are considered to be divine beings who bring good fortune to households in the new year, and are characterized by celebrating the new year and reciting congratulatory messages praising the household. Daikokumai, Banzai, Ebisu-mawashi, Torioi, and Harukoma are well known. The latter are known for puppet-twirling, monkey-twirling, goze, and Kakubei-jishi. These traveled in small groups, mainly performing door-to-door entertainment, but when a large group traveled, they performed in a troupe format, such as a local theater or puppet theater. Nowadays, individuals or groups that fit the term "traveling entertainer" have almost disappeared.
