Kostroma (English spelling)

Japanese: コストロマ(英語表記)Kostroma
Kostroma (English spelling)
The capital of Kostroma Oblast in western Russia. It is a river port city located on the left bank of the middle Volga River, about 300 km northeast of Moscow. It is said to have been founded in 1152 by Yuri Dolgorukiy, Prince of Rostov-Suzdal, but it does not appear in the chronicles until 1213. In the Middle Ages, it was a key point on the trade route of the Volga River, and as a result of fierce fighting between Novgorod, Tver, and Moscow over its ownership, it was annexed by the Moscow Principality in 1329. The Kremlin (fortress) and the cathedral (1239, rebuilt in 1773) are preserved. It developed as a textile town in the 19th century, and is currently home to Russia's largest flax complex, as well as machinery (textile machinery, food industry equipment, excavators), wood processing, and other industries. There are technical, educational, and agricultural universities, an open-air museum of architectural history, and an art museum. A railway line runs through the city, connecting Yaroslavl and Galich. Population: 268,617 (2010).
