A theorist of symbolism. Born in Poland. His real name was Wyzewski. He moved to France at the age of six, and taking advantage of the trend of Wagner worship in France, he founded the magazine "Wagner Review" with E. Dujardin in 1885. He emerged as a theorist of French symbolist poetry with "Wagner's Art" (May-June 1886 issue). In November 1886, he established the foundations of symbolism theory centered on S. Mallarmé with the third issue of the magazine "Independent Review" (February 1887 issue).

象徴主義の理論家。ポーランドの生れ。本名ビゼフスキWyzewski。6歳のときフランスに移り,同国でのワーグナー崇拝の風潮に乗じて1885年,E.デュジャルダンとともに《ワーグナー評論》誌を創刊し,《ワーグナーの芸術》(1886年5,6月号)によってフランス象徴詩派の理論家として登場,さらに86年11月からは第3次《独立評論》誌に拠ってS.マラルメを中心とする象徴主義理論の基礎を築いた(1887年2月号)。
