A medieval Greek heroic epic. The first part of the epic is the story of an Arab emir, his abduction of the daughter of the commander of the Byzantine provincial garrison, her successful rescue of her brothers, the emir's baptism and marriage in Byzantium, and the eventual migration of the emir's family to Byzantium. It was compiled in the 10th century and is set against the backdrop of the Byzantine-Arab conflict at the time. The second part, on the other hand, is the story of Digenis (meaning born of the union of a Muslim and a Christian family) Acritas (meaning commander of the border garrison), the son of an Arab emir and the daughter of a Greek commander, and includes tales of romantic adventures, heroic tales, a meeting with the Byzantine emperor on the banks of the Euphrates, the construction of a palace, and the death of a hero, in the romantic tradition of late antiquity.
