Sippar (English spelling)

Japanese: シッパル(英語表記)Sippar
Sippar (English spelling)
An ancient Babylonian city. Abu Habba, Iraq. It is located about 32 km southwest of Baghdad, on the east bank of the Euphrates River. It was under the control of the First Babylonian Dynasty, but was plundered and destroyed by the Elamites around 1174 BC. It was recaptured by Tiglath-Pileser I of Assyria, and the temple of the sun god Shamash was rebuilt by a Babylonian king around the 9th century BC. It was conquered by Cyrus II of the Achaemenid Empire of Persia in the 6th century BC. The temple of the sun god Shamash, a ziggurat, a long rectangular wall, and many documents from the Neo-Babylonian period have been excavated from this site. There are also records that the Euphrates River is called the Sippar River. H. Rassam, P. Schell, J. Jordan and others conducted the investigation.
