Wet tongue - Shitsuzu

Japanese:
Wet tongue - Shitsuzu

A tongue-like area on a weather chart where moist air extends in a certain direction. Usually refers to iso-height or iso-baric surfaces. A moist tongue appears as a tongue-like shape when iso-lines are drawn for physical quantities that indicate the amount of water vapor or moistness in the atmosphere, such as mixing ratio, specific humidity, dew point temperature, equivalent potential temperature, or the difference between air temperature and dew point. When a moist tongue is detected on an 850- or 700-hctopascal weather chart and is accompanied by a low-level jet stream flowing in that direction, torrential rain is likely to fall in the vicinity. Note that a dry tongue-like area is sometimes called a dry tongue, as opposed to a wet tongue.
