A general term for the genus Cissus (Vitaceae), with about 300 species distributed in tropical and subtropical regions such as Africa and Southeast Asia. The leaves are alternate and simple or compound. Some species have creeping stems while others have fleshy stems, and the creeping species are mainly used as ornamental plants in hanging pots or lantern-style arrangements. Cissus rhombifolia , also known as grape ivy, has glossy trifoliate compound leaves on slightly angular creeping stems and tendrils. The well-known variety is 'Ellen Danica', which has widely incised leaflets. Cissus antarctica, also known as kangaroo ivy, has creeping, leathery, simple leaves with sawtoothed leaf edges and no tendrils. C. discolor has a single leaf with silvery white markings like begonias, and its English name is begonia cissus. The undersides of the leaves and tendrils are a beautiful purple-red color. C. discolor should be kept in partial shade, or in a sunny location. Water sparingly in winter. C. discolor needs a temperature of 10°C or higher, but other plants can survive winter at around 5°C.
