A series of naturally occurring radioactive elements that begins with the uranium isotope 235 U (actinouran), undergoes seven alpha decays and four beta decays to finally reach the stable lead isotope 207 Pb (actinium D). It is called the actinium series because it passes through 227 Ac along the way. It is also called the actinouran series because it begins with actinouran. The mass numbers of nuclides, or atomic species, that belong to this series always leave a remainder of 3 when divided by 4, so it is also called the 4n+3 series. It is naturally found in uranium minerals along with the uranium series, but its amount is said to be about 4.5% of the uranium series.
