A city in the Sakha Republic in the eastern part of the Russian Federation. It is located on the banks of the Irelyakh River, which is a tributary of the Lena River, and has a population of 33,500 (estimated in 2003). It was founded in 1955 for diamond mining, and became a city in 1959. It is connected to Lensk, a port on the Lena River to the south, by a highway (230 km).
