Japanese: キジ(雉) - キジ

A general term for birds in the Phasianidae family of the order Galliformes. The Japanese pheasant, Phasianus colchicus (= P. vercicol ) (illustration), is the national bird of Japan (designated in 1947) and a hunting bird. It is widely distributed in the temperate zone of the Asian continent, and is a resident bird in Japan from Honshu to Yakushima and Tanegashima. However, some scholars distinguish between Japanese and continental pheasants as different species. Japanese pheasants are divided into four subspecies: the northern pheasant (northern Honshu, Sado), the Tokai pheasant (central and western Honshu, Shikoku), the Kyushu pheasant (southern Honshu, Kyushu, Goto Islands), and the Shima pheasant (part of Honshu, Yakushima, Tanegashima, Izu Islands).
