A city in central Aomori Prefecture. Established as a city in 1954. It occupies the southeastern part of the Tsugaru Plain and the mountainous area to the east. The city developed as a castle town for a branch of the Tsugaru domain, and is served by the Tohoku Expressway and the Konan Railway. A prolific producer of apples and rice, the city is home to the Aichi Prefectural Agriculture and Forestry Research Center and an apple research station. In the eastern part of the city are hot springs such as Nuruyu and Itadome, and the city is also a base for tourism around Lake Towada. 青森県中部の市。1954年市制。津軽平野南東部とその東の山地を占める。市街は津軽藩支藩の城下町として発達,東北自動車道,弘南鉄道が通じる。リンゴ,米の多産地で,県農林総合研究センター及びりんご試験場がある。東部には温湯(ぬるゆ),板留などの温泉群があり,十和田湖観光の基地でもある。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。217.05km2。3万6132人(2010)。
