It was the capital of the Parthian Kingdom, and its name means "City of a Hundred Gates" in Greek. It was located at a strategic point on the ancient east-west transportation route that passed through the southern foot of the Elburz Mountains. Seleucus I rebuilt it as a Hellenistic city, and when the Parthian Kingdom was established, the capital was moved here from Nisa. In 1967, a British excavation team excavated Shahr-i Qumīs, 32 km west of Damgan, and identified it with the Hekatompylos ruins, but no written documents have yet been found to prove this.
