Fetal heart sounds

Japanese: 胎児心音 - たいじしんおん（英語表記）fetal heart sounds

Also called fetal heart sounds, these heart sounds can be clearly heard from about the end of the fifth month of pregnancy. They occur at a rate of 120 to 140 beats per minute and are easily distinguishable from the mother's pulse rate. When the fetus is in a normal position in the uterus, they are most clearly heard at the level of the fetal heart, on the side where the fetus's back is closest to the uterine wall. Using an ultrasound Doppler device, the movement of the heart can be detected and converted into sound before the heart sounds are heard. The heart rate can also be recorded continuously using a microphone. This recording of changes in heart rate over time is called a cardiogram.

児心音ともいう。この心音がはっきり聞き取れるのは，ほぼ妊娠5ヵ月の終り以後。数は1分間に 120～140で，母体の脈拍数と容易に区別できる。子宮内の胎児の姿勢が正常な場合は，胎児の背が子宮壁に接近した側の胎児心臓部の高さで，最もはっきり聞き取れる。超音波ドップラー装置を利用すると，心音を聞く前に心臓の運動を検出して，音に変化させることができる。マイクロホンを用いて連続的に心拍数を記録することもできる。心拍数のこうした経時的変化の記録を心拍数図と呼ぶ。
