A puzzle is a puzzle in which a picture or map is made by correctly combining pieces of various irregular shapes. Originally, the pieces were made by cutting pictures drawn on wooden boards, and later on paper boards, with a jigsaw, which can cut complex lines and curves, hence the name. The more pieces there are and the more different their shapes, the more difficult it is, and it can take hours to complete. It started out in the 18th century in England as a geography teaching tool made from disassembled maps, and eventually pictures with themes such as history, the alphabet, and plants and animals came to be used. In the 1860s and 1870s, puzzles using famous paintings began to be made in England and the United States. They became popular among the general public in the early 1900s, and became popular again as a cheap and reusable entertainment item during the Great Depression of the 1930s. They became popular again after World War II, and became established as a common form of entertainment. They were imported to Japan in the 1970s and became widely enjoyed.
