Iron deficiency anemia is an anemia caused by a lack of iron, which is a component of hemoglobin. It is hypochromic microcytic anemia, the most common type of anemia, and is more common in women. A normal adult has 3 to 5 g of iron in the body, two-thirds of which is contained in red blood cells as hemoglobin.
