Kiso Valley

Japanese:
Kiso Valley
A valley in the upper reaches of the Kiso River, spanning from southwestern Nagano Prefecture to southeastern Gifu Prefecture. Historically, it included the Narai River valley, which continues to the north across Torii Pass. The Kiso Mountains rise to the east and the Hida Mountains to the west. All of the area is mountainside sloping except for a narrow plain along the river, and the valley bottom receives little sunlight in winter. Most of the area is covered with forest, including beautiful forests of the five Kiso trees: Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusifolia), Sawara (Cupress), Juniperus japonicus, Asunaro (Asian Aspergillus arborescens), and Koyamaki (Japanese cedar). In the early modern period, the Nakasendo road passed through the Kiso Valley, and 11 post stations were established in the valley, including Fukushima Barrier in Kiso Fukushima. The post town scenery is well preserved in Tsumago and Narai, and there are many historical landscapes such as Torii Pass, Kiso Pass, and Magome Pass, which were once difficult transportation routes. At the southern end is Magome, known for Shimazaki Toson's novel "Before Dawn." There are also beautiful gorges such as Nezame-no-toko, and the Kisokoma Plateau and Mitake Plateau are becoming tourist resorts.
