The name of the king of the Mali Empire, which flourished in the interior of West Africa in the 13th and 14th centuries, at the height of its power. Mansa was the title of the king, and he was also called Kankan Mūsā. He is thought to have reigned in the first half of the 14th century. The Mali Empire produced a large amount of gold within its territory, which was sent to North Africa through trade across the Sahara Desert. Rumors of the lavish pilgrimage that King Musa made to Mecca in 1324-25 and the enormous amount of gold he donated in Cairo on the way spread the name of "Mali, the Golden Empire" throughout the Mediterranean world.
