Ego instinct - Ichtriebe [Germany]

Japanese: 自我本能 - じがほんのう（英語表記）Ichtriebe[ドイツ]

A term coined by S. Freud. Traditionally, it has been translated as "ego instinct," but it would be more accurate to translate it as "ego impulse" or "ego drive" based on the original meaning of Trieb (drive in English). Freud was a clinician, unlike previous psychologists who studied the perception and learning phenomena of normal people, and so he focused on neurosis. In order to explain neurosis, the concept of conflict is essential, and the origin of conflict must be considered. He therefore borrowed the concepts of the instinct for individual preservation and the instinct for species preservation from biology, calling the former the "ego instinct" and the latter the "sexual instinct (sexual drive, sexual drive)," and considered the conflict between the two to be the etiological conflict of neurosis.
