Private Farming Story - Shikanou Gyodan

Japanese: 私家農業談 - しかのうぎょうだん

This agricultural book from the late Edo period was written in 1789 (Kansei 1) by Miyanaga Masaun (1732-1803) of Shimokawasaki Village, Tonami County, Etchu Province (present-day Oyabe City, Toyama Prefecture). Modelled on the Complete Book of Agriculture, it was compiled with many additions of local circumstances, making it the most comprehensive agricultural book of its time. Masaun studied botany, Chinese poetry, waka poetry, haiku poetry and more, and his broad education was the basis of this book. The Miyanaga family was an old local family with many heads who were passionate about agricultural instruction, so he titled it "Private House" to indicate that it would be a guide for his descendants. 江戸後期の農書。越中国礪(砺)波郡下川崎村(現，富山県小矢部市)の宮永正運(1732‐1803)が1789年(寛政1)に書きあげた。《農業全書》を手本に，地元の事情を多く加えて構成し，同時代の農書中もっとも充実した一書である。正運は本草学，漢詩，和歌，俳句などを学び，はばひろい教養が本書の基盤にあった。宮永家は土地の旧家で，農事指導に熱心な当主が多く，子孫のための手引きの意味で“私家”と題した。【筑波常治】
