A monthly specialist magazine on Japan's leading historical research. It was launched in 1889 at the same time as the founding of the Historical Society. As the Historical Society was an academic society based on the Department of History at the University of Tokyo, the magazine has a strong coloration of official academicism. In particular, with the birth of the Department of History at Kyoto University, it became a research journal for University of Tokyo academia, and has contributed to the formation of empirical modern history in Japan. It is currently edited by the Historical Society, which has its headquarters in the Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo, and is published by Yamakawa Publishing.
