Ebino earthquake - Ebino earthquake

Japanese: えびの地震 - えびのじしん
Ebino earthquake - Ebino earthquake
An earthquake occurred at around 10:45 a.m. on February 21, 1968, in the Ebino Plateau, on the northwestern foot of Mount Kirishima, southwest of Miyazaki Prefecture. The epicenter was at 130°43′ east longitude and 32°01′ north latitude. The depth of the epicenter was less than 10 km, and the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.1 on the Richter scale. A strong earthquake of magnitude 6 was observed in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, near the epicenter, and was felt throughout Kyushu. Since a magnitude 5.7 earthquake had occurred two hours before this earthquake, and three earthquakes of magnitude 5.4 to 5.6 had occurred by March 25, 1968, this was thought to be a swarm of earthquakes (see Earthquake Swarm). The main shock caused 3 deaths, 42 injuries, and 1,004 houses were completely or partially destroyed. In addition, the earthquake on March 25th caused damage including 3 injuries and 165 houses being completely or partially destroyed. This area is covered with volcanic ash (shirasu), which caused many landslides and cliff collapses.
