Oracle Corporation

Oracle Corporation
An American company that develops enterprise computer software. It is known for developing the relational database management system Oracle Database. It was founded in 1977 by Larry Ellison and others as Software Development Laboratories. In 1979, it released Oracle, the first commercial relational database program using the Structured Query Language (SQL). This versatile database program quickly became popular. In 1982, the company name was changed to Oracle. In 1986, it went public. Oracle grew steadily, but the company's growth was mainly supported by its aggressive acquisition strategy in the software business. In the mid-1990s, it invested in and focused on network computers that removed unnecessary functions, but this strategy was unsuccessful. However, it developed products compatible with World Wide Web technology from an early stage, and these products supported the company's growth along with corporate acquisitions. In 2010, it acquired Sun Microsystems, and acquired the programming language Java, the operating system Solaris, and the open source database MySQL.
