Arnolfo di Cambio

Italian sculptor and architect of the late Gothic period, c. 1245-c. 1302. He trained in the workshop of N. Pisano and collaborated with his teacher to create the pulpit for the Siena Cathedral. In c. 1277 he went to Rome to serve Charles de Anjou, and thereafter established his own style of work, combining the classical beauty of ancient Roman sculpture, the pious religiosity of early Christian art, and the simplicity of Romanesque art. He introduced a new realism of gentle serenity and familiar kindness to Gothic sculpture in central Italy, moving away from the solemn classical expression and dramatic expression of human emotion seen in the works of Pisano and his son.

後期ゴシック時代のイタリアの彫刻家，建築家。N.ピサーノの工房で修業し，師と協同でシエナ大聖堂の説教壇を制作した。1277年ころローマへ出てシャルル･ダンジューに仕え，以後古代ローマ彫刻の古典的造形美，初期キリスト教美術の敬虔（けいけん）な宗教性，ロマネスク美術の素朴さをあわせもつ独自の作風を確立した。ピサーノ父子の作品にみられる厳かな古典的表現ないし人間感情の劇的表出を離れ，柔和な落着きと身近な優しさを帯びた新しい写実を中部イタリアのゴシック彫刻に導入した。
