Born: November 1, 1864. Strafchin [Died] November 20, 1925. Warsaw Polish novelist. Born into a fallen minor noble family, he spent his childhood in poverty, but he began writing novels in the late 1880s and became one of Poland's greatest writers in the first half of the 20th century. His novels often tackled social ills, and the protagonists are often idealists who are frustrated by the wall of human coldness and stupidity. His representative work, Popioły (1904) (Ashes), is a lyrical portrayal of people's lives and the fight for independence in the social context leading up to the start of the Napoleonic Wars. His other works include Syzyfowe prace (1898) (The Work of Sisyphus), Ludzie bezdomni (The Homeless) (1900), and plays.
