...This light-hearted romantic comedy depicts the love story between a young princess (Audrey Hepburn) and an American newspaper reporter (Gregory Peck) on a goodwill tour of Europe, set against the backdrop of Rome's beautiful tourist attractions. The original story was written by Dalton Trumbo (1905-76), who was blacklisted during the Red Scare, under the pseudonym Ian McLellan Hunter. It was awarded the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and in recent years, a second draft written in 1951 by Ben Hecht (1893-1964) has been discovered in the library of Indiana University. Originally, Liberty Films, the company of director Frank Capra, who had made the romantic comedy masterpiece It Happened One Night (1934), brought the project to Paramount in 1948 as a film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Cary Grant, but it fell through due to budget issues. Four years later, when Hollywood was on the offensive against television, the project was passed on from Capra to Wyler, who produced and directed it using Paramount dollars that had been frozen in Italy by the U.S. Marshall Plan.

…ヨーロッパを親善旅行中の某国の若い王女(オードリー･ヘプバーン)とアメリカの新聞記者(グレゴリー･ペック)とのラブ･ロマンスを，ローマの美しい観光名所を背景に，軽快にほほえましく描くロマンティック･コメディで，オリジナルストーリーは，〈赤狩り〉のブラックリストに載せられていたドルトン･トランボDalton Trumbo(1905‐76)が，イアン･マクレラン･ハンターの仮名で書いたものである。アカデミー脚本(オリジナルストーリー)賞が与えられたが，近年，インディアナ大学の蔵書のなかからベン･ヘクトBen Hecht(1893‐1964)が1951年に書いた第2稿が発見されたという。　そもそもは，ロマンティック･コメディの傑作として知られる《或る夜の出来事》(1934)をつくったフランク･キャプラ監督の〈リバティ･フィルムズ〉が，1948年にエリザベス･テーラーとケーリー･グラント主演で映画化する企画として，パラマウントに持ち込んだものであったが，製作費の問題で実現せず，それから4年後，ハリウッドがテレビの攻勢を受けていたときに，キャプラからワイラーに企画が引きつがれ，アメリカのマーシャル･プラン政策によってイタリアに凍結されていたパラマウントのドルを使って，ワイラーが製作，監督した。…
