Vindhya Range (English spelling)

Japanese: ビンディヤ[山脈]（英語表記）Vindhya Range

A mountain range that crosses central India from east to west, intermittently, across almost the entire peninsula. Its total length is about 1000 km. Its elevation is 500-1000 m, with its highest point only 1113 m, but its southern side is a steep cliff that drops into the Narmada River graben. For this reason, it has long been an important barrier separating the Deccan Plateau from northern India, and even today it is an important boundary between the Indo-Aryan peoples in the north and the Dravidian peoples in the south. The northern side of the range slopes downward toward the Malwa Plateau, through which the great rivers of the Ganga (Ganges) River system, such as the Chambal, Betwa, Khen, and Sone, flow north.

インド中央部，断続的ながらインド半島をほぼ全域にわたって東西に横断する山脈。全長約1000km。標高500～1000m，最高点でも1113mにすぎないが，南側は急崖でナルマダー川の地溝に落下する。このため，古くからデカン高原を北インドから隔離する重要な障壁をなし，現在でも北側のインド･アーリヤ系と南側のドラビダ系の民族分布の重要な境界となっている。北側はマールワ台地に向かって低下し，そこをガンガー(ガンジス)川水系のチャンバル，ベトワ，ケン，ソーンなどの大河川が北流する。
