…Leather substitutes have a relatively long history. Before World War II, woven or knitted fabrics coated with nitrocellulose were called imitation leather, imitation leather, or simply leather. Later, polyvinyl chloride resin was developed, and substitutes using this went on the market in 1948. This was called PVC leather (or vinyl leather), and due to the shortage of materials at the time, it was sold in large quantities, and the production of imitation leather was almost discontinued. After that, the quality was gradually improved, and in 1960, a sponge-like polyvinyl chloride resin surface coated with nylon resin (polyamide) paint was sold under the name synthetic leather, as it had a different texture and appearance from conventional PVC leather and was closer to the properties of leather. …
