Regis - Jean Baptiste Régis

A French Jesuit. His Chinese name was Lei Xiaosi. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1679, travelled to China in 1698, and was called to Beijing to serve at the imperial court because of his knowledge of mathematics and astronomy. In the project to create the "Complete Guide to the Imperial Palace," Regis surveyed a larger area than any other missionary, covering Mongolia, Northeast China, Shandong, Hebei, Henan, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Yunnan, and Taiwan. He was also a skilled linguist, and translated the "Book of Changes" into Latin. He died in Beijing.

フランス人のイエズス会士。漢名は雷孝思。1679年イエズス会に入会し、1698年に中国に渡り、その数学、天文学に対する知識を買われて、宮廷奉仕のために北京(ペキン)によばれた。『皇輿全覧図(こうよぜんらんず)』作製の事業で、レジスの測量した地域は他のどの宣教師よりも広く、蒙古(もうこ)、東北、山東、河北(かほく)、河南(かなん)、江蘇(こうそ)、安徽(あんき)、浙江(せっこう)、福建、雲南、台湾に及んだ。語学にも堪能(たんのう)で、『易経』をラテン語に翻訳した。北京で客死。
