Vicuna (English spelling)

A mammal of the order Artiodactyla and family Camelidae. Also known as the vicuna or vicunia. It is found in South America, from Peru to Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile, and lives in the Andes at 3,600 to 5,400 meters above sea level. It is the smallest of the South American camelids, with a body length of 1.25 to 1.9 meters, a tail length of 15 to 25 centimeters, shoulder height of 0.7 to 1.1 meters, and weight of around 50 kilograms. Its fur is long and woolly, reddish yellow, and white on the underbelly. The hair on its prothorax is particularly long, reaching 40 to 60 centimeters. It lives in small groups of 5 to 15 animals, led by a male leader, and feeds mainly on perennial grasses. Its gestation period is about 10 months, and it gives birth to one calf per litter. Its life span is 15 to 20 years.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱偶蹄(ぐうてい)目ラクダ科の動物。別名ビキューナ、ビクニア。南アメリカのペルー、ボリビア、アルゼンチン、チリにかけて分布し、海抜3600～5400メートルのアンデス山中に生息する。体長1.25～1.9メートル、尾長15～25センチメートル、肩高0.7～1.1メートル、体重50キログラム前後で、南アメリカ産のラクダ類ではもっとも小形。被毛は羊毛状で長く、赤みを帯びた黄色、下腹部は白色である。前胸部の毛はとくに長く、40～60センチメートルに達する。5～15頭の小群をつくり、雄のリーダーに率いられ、多年生の草を主食としている。妊娠期間はほぼ10か月、1産1子を産む。寿命は15～20年である。
