...For this reason, when classifying musical instruments in musical instrumentology or ethnomusicology, the Sachs-Hornbostel system proposed by Hornbostel and C. Sachs in their Taxonomy of Musical Instruments (1914) is used, rather than this three-part system. According to this system, all musical instruments are first classified into four types: idiophones, membranophones, chordophones, and aerophones, and each of these is further classified. However, weaknesses in this classification system have been pointed out, and various other methods have been devised.
