〘名〙 (「あかき」とも)① トウダイグサ科の半落葉高木。熱帯アジアの山野に生え、沖縄には普通に見られる。高さ二〇メートル以上に達する。葉は三つの小葉からなる複葉で、赤く長い柄があり互生する。小葉は長さ一〇~二〇センチメートルの卵形、または楕円形で先がとがり、縁に鈍い鋸歯(きょし)がある。春、黄緑色の小花を円錐状につける。雌雄異株。材は暗赤色で堅く、湿気にも強いので、紫檀(したん)の代わりに細工物などに用いられる。あたん。かたんのき。② 花櫚(かりん)、紫檀、梅、蘇芳(すおう)、赤樫(あかがし)、姫沙羅(ひめしゃら)など材質の赤い木。※延喜式(927)二三「太宰府〈略〉〈青砥二百顆、赤木南嶋所レ進、其数随レ得〉」※梁塵秘抄(1179頃)二「小磯の浜にこそ、紫檀あかぎは寄らずして、流れ来で」③ 「あかぎづくり(赤木作)」の略。※歌舞伎・船打込橋間白浪(鋳掛松)(1866)序幕「お家の重宝赤木の短刀を失し故」④ 皮をはいだ木。⇔黒木。※源氏(1001‐14頃)野分「中宮の御まへに、〈略〉色くさをつくして、よしある黒木、あかきのませをゆひまぜつつ」⑤ 桑の一品種。葉は大形で、発育のよい中生、または晩生で各地に栽培。⑥ 植物「かつら(桂)」の異名。〔和漢三才図会(1712)〕⑦ 植物「ねじき(捩木)」の異名。⑧ 植物「もっこく(木斛)」の異名。
