Shevchenko, Taras Grigor'evich
Born: March 9, 1814 in Molintsy
Died March 10, 1861. Petersburg, Russia, Ukrainian poet and painter. Born into a serf family, he lost his parents at a young age, but in 1838, thanks to the efforts of Dzhekovsky and others, he gained his freedom and studied at art school. In 1840, he published his first collection of poems, Kobzari, which described the suffering of peasants in poverty and their cry for freedom, ushering in a new era in the history of Ukrainian literature. In 1847, he was arrested for participating in the revolutionary movement and spent ten years in exile. His representative works include the epic poem Gaidamaki (1841), which depicts a peasant uprising, the political poem Son (44), Kavkaz (45), and Zaveshchanie (45), which calls for the overthrow of autocracy, and he is considered the greatest national poet of Ukraine. He also wrote nine novels and two plays in Russian, and left behind an excellent body of work as a painter.

ロシア,ウクライナの詩人,画家。農奴の家に生れ,幼くして両親を失ったが,1838年ジェコフスキーらの奔走により自由の身となり,美術学校に学んだ。 40年,貧苦にあえぎ,自由を叫び求める農民の姿をうたった最初の詩集『コブザーリ』 Kobzariを出版,ウクライナ文学史に新時代を開いた。 47年革命運動に参加したために逮捕,10年間の流刑生活をおくった。代表作に,農民一揆を描いた叙事詩『ガイダマキ』 Gaidamaki (1841) ,政治詩『夢』 Son (44) ,『コーカサス』 Kavkaz (45) ,専制政治の打倒を呼びかけた『遺言』 Zaveshchanie (45) などがあり,ウクライナ最大の国民詩人とされる。そのほかロシア語で書いた小説9編,戯曲2編があり,画家としてもすぐれた作品を残している。
