...The early works are also considered to be in the style of the Yi Dynasty in terms of both shape and design, but while the shapes still retain some of the old Karatsu style, it has also been pointed out that they were significantly influenced by Chinese blue and white porcelain, which was imported to Japan in large quantities at the time. It developed rapidly in the second half of the 17th century, and was exported overseas as Imari blue and white porcelain, and in the Enpo to Genroku period (1673-1704), elaborate Nabeshima blue and white porcelain was produced at the Nabeshima clan kilns. In the late Edo period, blue and white porcelain was also produced in Kyo ware, and then in Seto, Kato Tamikichi introduced the Hizen porcelain method during the Bunka era (1804-18) and began producing blue and white porcelain, which developed rapidly to the point where it could be compared to Imari. ...
