A character training organization founded in the United States in 1913 by Ahn Chang-ho, a Korean independence activist. Its purpose was to cultivate the virtues of "diligent work, diligence, loyalty, and bravery" and to create "healthy personalities" that possessed the three facets of "virtue, body, and intelligence." The Heungsadan also became a political force within the Korean community in America and was often in conflict with the Dojikai, a group affiliated with Syngman Rhee. In the 1920s, a sister organization, the Doyukai, was formed in Korea, but in 1937, 150 members, including Ahn Chang-ho and Lee Kwang-soo, were arrested and the organization was dissolved.
