1767‐94 He was a member of the National Assembly during the French Revolution, a member of the Mountain faction, and one of the radical theorists who worked alongside Robespierre. Born to a wealthy farming family in northern France, he lost his father at the age of ten, and experienced heartbreak and running away from home during his student years, but in 1788 he became a law graduate. Around that time, he wrote a long poem, Le Organ (1789), which mocked tradition and authority, and even criticized the king. When the revolution began, he became involved in political activities in the small city of Blérancourt in northern France where he lived, and in 1791 he published Les Spirits de la Revolution et de la Constitution in which he praised the achievements of the revolution.
