He was a member of the National Assembly during the French Revolution, a member of the Mountain faction, and one of the radical theorists who worked alongside Robespierre. Born to a wealthy farming family in northern France, he lost his father at the age of ten, and experienced heartbreak and running away from home during his student years, but in 1788 he became a law graduate. Around that time, he wrote a long poem, Le Organ (1789), which mocked tradition and authority, and even criticized the king. When the revolution began, he became involved in political activities in the small city of Blérancourt in northern France where he lived, and in 1791 he published Les Spirits de la Revolution et de la Constitution in which he praised the achievements of the revolution.

フランス革命期の国民公会議員で，山岳派に属し，急進的な理論家の一人としてロベスピエールと行動をともにした。北フランスの富農の家系に生まれ，10歳で父を失い，学生時代に失恋や家出を経験したが，1788年に法学士となった。その頃，伝統や権威を嘲笑する長編詩《オルガン》(1789)を書いて国王をも批判した。革命が始まると，その居住する北フランスの小都市ブレランクールで政治活動に入り，91年には《革命およびフランス憲法の精神》を刊行して革命の成果をたたえた。
