An evergreen shrub of the Illicaceae family whose fruits are used to make the Chinese spice five-spice powder. It is also called Illicium vulgare. It is native to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China and Indochina, and is now widely cultivated in mainland Southeast Asia as far as southern India. The fruit is a star-shaped aggregate of 6-8 capsules, 3-3.5 cm in diameter. When ripe, it turns brown and becomes woody, and splits open to reveal shiny brown, oblate seeds. The fruits are harvested while still unripe, dried, and used as is or as a powder. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
