...The most important troupes of Tamba Sarugaku were Yata Sarugaku, based in what is now Kameoka, Kyoto Prefecture, Umewaka Sarugaku in Oshima, Ayabe City, and Hiyoshi Sarugaku, whose base is unknown. Yata Sarugaku is an old troupe that has been called the honza since the Kamakura period, and it attended the Shussui-e at Hossho-ji Temple in Kyoto, the Mishiro Festival at Kamo Shrine, and the rice planting ritual at Sumiyoshi Shrine together with the Enami-za (Niiza) and Hojoji-za of Settsu, and also held the position of gakuto (head of the troupe) at Gokomiya Shrine in Fushimi from a fairly early period until 1437 (Eikyo 9), providing Sarugaku services at the spring and autumn rituals. Umewaka and Hiyoshi also frequently performed in Sendo around the Oei period (1394-1428), and Tamba Sarugaku had a central presence in Kyoto before Yamato Sarugaku made its way there. However, from the end of the Muromachi period to the beginning of the Edo period, Tamba Sarugaku was absorbed into Yamato Sarugaku as tsure and jiutaikata (chants), and the troupes disappeared. *Some of the terminology used in reference to "Enamiza" is listed below.
