The Wind Rises

An animated film written, scripted and directed by Miyazaki Hayao. Produced by Studio Ghibli. The title "The Wind Rises" comes from the novel of the same name by Hori Tatsuo. Released in July 2013, the film attracted 740,000 viewers over the two weekend days immediately following its release. It topped the box office rankings for three consecutive weeks after its release. In the three weeks since its release, the total number of viewers has reached 3.5 million, and the total box office revenue has reached 4.3 billion yen (as of August 19, 2013). The original story was serialized in the model magazine "Model Graphics" (Dainippon Kaiga) from the April 2009 issue to the January 2010 issue.
The main character is Jiro Horikoshi, an aircraft designer. He is based on a real person who lived in the same era as Tatsuo Hori, the creator of the Zero fighter, but the story of his love life and marriage is original. Horikoshi's girlfriend Naoko is a fictional character, but she is named after Tatsuo Hori's novel "Naoko," and the story of the film incorporates elements of the novel "The Wind Rises." For this reason, the film includes a dedication in the credits that reads, "With respect to Jiro Horikoshi and Tatsuo Hori."
The story is set in Japan during the Taisho and Showa periods. It begins with the childhood of Horikoshi Jiro, who is interested in designing airplanes. Eventually, Horikoshi goes on to university in Tokyo, where he encounters the Great Kanto Earthquake. He helps Nahoko and a female maid when they evacuate. A few years later, after graduating from university, Horikoshi joins Mitsubishi Internal Combustion Engines, where he is in charge of aircraft design, and reunites with Nahoko. However, Nahoko is suffering from tuberculosis. The two get married, but Horikoshi begins designing fighter planes for World War II, and Nahoko, whose illness has worsened, heads alone to a sanatorium. The voice of Horikoshi Jiro is provided by Anno Hideaki, director of the anime series "Neon Genesis Evangelion." He was personally offered the role by Suzuki Toshio, chief producer of "The Wind Rises." Actress Takimoto Miori was selected through an audition to play Nahoko. Other cast members include Morio Kazama as Naoko's father, Keiko Takeshita as Horikoshi's mother, Mansai Nomura as Caproni, an Italian aircraft designer, and Hidetoshi Nishijima as Honjo, Horikoshi's colleague and best friend. The film also attracted attention for the fact that the sound effects, such as the sound of an airplane's propeller and engine, were produced by a human mouth.
Smoking scenes frequently appear in the film, and the NPO Japan Society for Tobacco Control (President: Manabu Sakuda) has submitted a request to Studio Ghibli asking for consideration, citing "the many smoking scenes." In response, the Smoking Culture Research Group (President: Koichi Sugiyama), a group of smokers, has raised a counterargument, sparking controversy.
In August 2013, it was selected for the competitive section (out of 20 films) of the 70th Venice International Film Festival. This is the third time that a work by director Miyazaki Hayao has been selected for the festival, following "Howl's Moving Castle" in 2004 and "Ponyo" in 2008.

宮崎駿が原作、脚本、監督を務めるアニメーション映画。制作はスタジオジブリ。題名の「風立ちぬ」は堀辰雄の同名の小説に由来する。2013年7月に公開され、公開直後の土日2日間で74万人の観客を動員。公開後3週連続で興行ランキング1位を獲得。公開後3週間の累計観客動員数は350万人、累計興行収入は43億円に達している(13年8月19日時点)。原作は模型雑誌「モデルグラフィックス」(大日本絵画)に09年4月号から10年1月号まで連載された。
主人公は飛行機設計士である堀越二郎。ゼロ戦の生みの親で、堀辰雄と同時代を生きた実在の人物がモデルだが、恋人との恋愛や結婚の話はオリジナルである。堀越の恋人・菜穂子は架空の人物だが、堀辰雄の小説『菜穂子』から命名、映画のストーリーに小説『風立ちぬ』の要素を絡めている。そのため、当映画では「堀越二郎と堀辰雄に敬意を込めて」とクレジットに献辞が書かれている。
物語の舞台は大正から昭和の日本。飛行機の設計に興味を抱く堀越二郎の少年時代から始まる。やがて堀越は東京の大学に進学するが、そこで関東大震災に遭遇。避難する時に菜穂子とお手伝いの女性を助ける。数年後、大学を卒業し、三菱内燃機に入社して航空機の設計を担当するようになった堀越は、菜穂子と再会。しかし、菜穂子は結核を患っていた。2人は結婚するが、堀越は第二次世界大戦に向けて戦闘機の設計を始め、病が重くなった菜穂子は1人で療養所に向かう、というストーリー。堀越二郎の声を担当したのは、アニメ「新世紀エヴァンゲリオン」などの監督を務めた庵野秀明。「風立ちぬ」のチーフプロデューサーの鈴木敏夫から直々にオファーがあった。菜穂子役は女優の瀧本美織がオーディションで選ばれている。他に菜穂子の父親を風間杜夫、堀越の母親を竹下景子、イタリアの飛行機設計者であるカプローニを野村萬斎、堀越の同僚で親友の本庄を西島秀俊が演じる。また、飛行機のプロペラやエンジンの音などの効果音を人間の口で出しているとして話題になった。
映画にはたびたび喫煙シーンが登場し、それに対してNPO法人日本禁煙学会(作田学理事長)が「喫煙場面が多い」として配慮を求める要望書をスタジオジブリ側に提出した。それに対して愛煙家の団体である「喫煙文化研究会」(すぎやまこういち代表)が反論を唱えるなど、議論を呼んでいる。
2013年8月には、第70回ベネチア国際映画祭のコンペティション部門(全20作品)に選出された。宮崎駿監督の作品の出品は、04年「ハウルの動く城」、08年の「崖の上のポニョ」に次ぐ3回目。
