Also known as documentary photography. Regardless of the medium of transmission, documentary photography is photography that objectively depicts facts and has documentary value in terms of content. However, documentary photography often also plays a role in educating the public about the true nature of social phenomena and in publicity. A good example of this is the camera campaign organized by the Farm Security Administration in the United States during the Great Depression of the 1930s to raise awareness of the devastation of rural southern areas. Of course, there are also many examples of documentary photography made by individuals, and this is the field in which the social role of photography is most questioned.

ドキュメンタリー・フォトともいう。伝達媒体にかかわりなく，事実を客観的に描写し，内容的に資料的価値をそなえた写真。しかし記録写真はしばしば大衆に社会的現象の本質を啓蒙し宣伝する役割も負わされている。アメリカで 1930年代の大恐慌に際し，農業安定局 Farm Security Administrationが組織した，南部農村の荒廃を啓蒙するカメラ・キャンペーンはその好例。もちろん個人的に作られる記録写真の例も数多く，写真の社会的役割が最も問われる分野である。
