"Dew of Ohara" - Ohara no tsuyu

…Upon graduation in 1904, he was appointed assistant professor at the school, but when Okakura Tenshin left the art school to found the Japan Art Institute in 1908, he left his alma mater along with Hashimoto Gaho and Yokoyama Taikan and became a full member of the institute. Since then, he exhibited works that hinted at the direction of modern Japanese painting, such as “Jai,” which incorporated Western-style shading and color sense, “Shurado Emaki,” based on research into Yamato-e painting, and “Ohara no Tsuyu,” a so-called hazy style that could be described as a line-less drawing technique that uses color to process space. In 1903, he became professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts again and went to Europe as a student sponsored by the Ministry of Education. …

…94年卒業と同時に同校助教授に任ぜられるが，98年岡倉天心が美術学校を辞して日本美術院を創立するに際し，橋本雅邦，横山大観らとともに母校を退き，美術院正員となる。以来，日本美術院が日本絵画協会と連合して開催した共進会に，洋風の陰影法と色彩感覚をとりいれた《闍維（じやい）》，大和絵研究に基づく《修羅道絵巻》，色彩によって空間を処理してゆく没線描法ともいうべき，いわゆる朦朧（もうろう）体の《大原の露》など，近代日本画の方向を暗示する作品を発表した。1903年ふたたび東京美術学校教授となり，文部省留学生として渡欧する。…
