Arguedas - Arguedas (English spelling) José María Arguedas

Arguedas - Arguedas (English spelling) José María Arguedas

Peruvian novelist. His father was a lawyer who defended the rights of the Andean Indians, so he lived among them for a long time and mastered their language, Quechua, as well as their music and customs. Believing that Indian culture is comparable to Western culture, he published novels that attempted to fuse Quechua and Spanish. Among his masterpieces are Deep River (1958), which is strongly autobiographical and depicts the symmetrical foolishness of the people living at a Catholic boarding school and the beauty of nature outside through the eyes of a boy who enrolls in the school, and All Blood (1964), which depicts the social problems facing modern Peru, such as the oncoming wave of industrialization and the exodus of Indians to cities.
