...The remains of a late Yayoi period settlement, located on a plateau about 19m above sea level on the left bank of the downstream Tama River, in Kugahara 4-6 chome, Ota Ward, Tokyo. During road construction work associated with land readjustment that began in 1927, large and small pit dwellings were discovered in the cut, and many pottery fragments were also excavated, drawing attention to the site. Some of the pit dwellings were destroyed in a fire. Excavations were conducted on part of the settlement in 1947-48. In 1939, a detailed classification of the pottery excavated from the site led to the idea that it could be divided into two periods, the older one being called the Kugahara style and the newer one the Yayoi-cho style. ... *Some of the terminology used to refer to "Kugahara-style pottery" is listed below.
