The erudite Hong-ci-ke (English: Bo-xue Hong-ci-ke; Po-hsüeh Hung-tz`uk`o)

In China, during the Qing Dynasty, this was one of the miscellaneous subjects in the civil service promotion law. During the Kangxi Emperor's reign, this was established by temporary imperial decree to select scholars who were both academically competent and had outstanding writing skills in addition to the permanent imperial examination (direct route). The examination focused on poetry and fu, and those who passed were given the title of Hanlin official. Its origins were modeled after the Northern Song Dynasty's Hongci Department and the Southern Song Dynasty's Department of Erudition and Hongci Department.
