Sayagata - Sayagata

A type of pattern. It is a type of manji pattern, in which the neat manji pattern is distorted into a diamond shape. It is also called hishi manji. It is so named because it was often used as the background pattern of a silk fabric called saya. After the Momoyama period, it was mainly used as the background pattern of rinzu. It is also widely used in komon and karakami paper, and as decoration for shrine architecture.

模様の一つ。卍(まんじ)つなぎ文の一種で、端正な卍つなぎを菱(ひし)状にゆがめた形。菱万字ともよぶ。紗綾という絹織物の地文として多く用いられたところからこの名がある。桃山時代以後おもに綸子(りんず)の地文に用いられた。また小紋や唐紙、さらには神社建築の装飾としても広く用いられている。
