Alkyd resin - Arukidojiushi (English spelling) alkyd resin

It is a type of polyester resin and is mainly used in paints. It is made by heating polyhydric alcohols such as ethylene glycol, glycerin (glycerol), and pentaerythritol with dibasic acids such as phthalic anhydride and maleic anhydride. For example, a resin made from glycerin and phthalic anhydride is called glyptal resin, but this resin itself does not have many uses. However, when an appropriate amount of drying oil (linseed oil, tung oil, soybean oil, etc.) or the unsaturated fatty acids that compose them (linoleic acid, oleic acid, etc.) are added to it and reacted, or dehydrated castor oil is applied, the heat and oxygen in the air cause double bonds to bridge the unsaturated fatty acids, which are the components, resulting in a highly elastic material that is highly resistant to water and chemicals. It is used as is or mixed with melamine or urea resin (urea resin) as a flexible metal paint.

ポリエステル樹脂の一種でおもに塗料に使われている。エチレングリコール、グリセリン（グリセロール）やペンタエリトリトールなどの多価アルコールと、無水フタル酸や無水マレイン酸などの二塩基性酸とを加熱してつくる。たとえばグリセリンと無水フタル酸からつくった樹脂をグリプタル樹脂というが、これ自体にはあまり使い道はない。ところが、これに乾性油（あまに油、桐油(きりゆ)、大豆油など）またはそれらを構成している不飽和脂肪酸（リノール酸、オレイン酸など）、または脱水ひまし油などを適当量加えて反応させたのち塗布すると、熱や空気中の酸素の働きで構成成分である不飽和脂肪酸に二重結合の橋架けがおこり、弾性に富み、耐水性、耐薬性の強いものができあがる。用途としては、そのまま、あるいはメラミンや尿素樹脂（ユリア樹脂）と混合して、屈曲性のある金属塗料として使用されている。
