...A method of reducing metal oxides using the large amount of heat generated when aluminum oxidizes. It is also called the aluminothermy process, or the Goldschmidt process after its inventor, H. Goldschmidt (1861-1923). When aluminum powder is mixed with metal oxide as a reducing agent and ignited, the metal is reduced and at the same time melted by the reaction heat, accumulating at the bottom of the vessel, and can be obtained as an ingot.
